About 'universities of art'|Academy of Art University Special - Part 3: Spotlight on Teresa Field, James Thai and Leah Aripotch








Although               it               is               more               famous               for               its               universities               and               industrial               base,               the               city               of               Syracuse,               New               York               is               also               home               to               an               exemplary               but               often               overlooked               art               museum,               the               Everson               Art               Museum.

Home               to               a               permanent               collection               of               over               11,000               works               and               objects,               the               Everson               Museum               of               Art               is               a               must-see               attraction               for               anyone               interested               in               the               world               of               art               and               its               impact               upon               the               human               condition.

The               hallmark               of               the               Everson's               permanent               collection               is               its               magnificent               collection               of               ceramics,               which               is               widely               regarded               as               one               of               the               best               in               the               country.

In               addition               to               ceramic               pieces               and               objects               from               as               far               back               in               time               as               1000               B.C.E.,               the               Everson               is               home               to               the               Ceramic               National               exhibitions,               which               has               allowed               the               museum               to               collect               over               4,000               pieces.

The               American               Art               Pottery               collection,               furthermore,               has               over               2,000               pieces,               including               objects               made               by               Tiffany,               George               Ohr,               and               Rookwood.
               For               those               who               are               more               interested               in               the               world               of               painting,               the               Everson               is               also               home               to               a               substantial               collection               of               American               paintings,               with               more               than               700               works               spanning               two               centuries.

Artists               represented               include               Jane               Petersen,               Eastman               Johnson,               and               Abbott               Handerson               (from               the               19th               Century,)               and               Jackson               Pollock,               Adolph               Gottlieb,               and               Milton               Avery               (from               the               20th               Century.)
               The               Everson               is               also               home               to               a               number               of               other               artistic               pieces               that               may               not               be               found               in               typical               art               museums.

These               include               sculpture               (with               artists               such               as               Mary               Frank               and               George               Segal,)               video               (with               over               500               tapes               focusing               especially               on               the               1960s               and               1970s,)               photographs               (from               the               19th               and               20th               Centuries,)               and               decorative               arts               (numbering               over               100               objects.)
               Regardless               of               one's               interest               in               the               art               world,               the               Everson               Art               Museum               in               Syracuse               has               something               to               offer.

Not               only               do               they               have               extensive               permanent               collections;               they               also               frequently               host               outstanding               traveling               exhibitions,               which               recently               included               "From               Turner               to               Cezanne,"               which               featured               a               number               of               fine               art               pieces               from               some               of               the               late               19th/early               20th               Centuries'               most               famous               and               celebrated               artists.
               Whether               one               is               from               Central               New               York               or               merely               visiting,               the               Everson               is               an               ideal               place               to               visit.

Furthermore,               they               also               offer               a               number               of               educational               opportunities,               making               them               especially               useful               for               teachers               wishing               to               show               their               students               the               wonders               that               can               often               be               found               in               the               world               of               art               and               creativity.

Educational               opportunities               are               also               available               for               families               and               other               groups.
               The               Everson               Museum               of               Art               is               open               Sunday               through               Friday               from               noon               to               5               p.m.

and               on               Saturday               from               10               a.m.

to               5               p.m.

General               admission               to               the               Everson               is               $5,               although               this               is               a               suggested               donation.

However,               some               traveling               exhibits               may               require               an               additional               price,               so               it               is               important               to               check               the               museum's               website               before               planning               a               visit.
