About 'universities of art'|Academy of Art University Special - Part 3: Spotlight on Teresa Field, James Thai and Leah Aripotch
Although it is more famous for its universities and industrial base, the city of Syracuse, New York is also home to an exemplary but often overlooked art museum, the Everson Art Museum. Home to a permanent collection of over 11,000 works and objects, the Everson Museum of Art is a must-see attraction for anyone interested in the world of art and its impact upon the human condition. The hallmark of the Everson's permanent collection is its magnificent collection of ceramics, which is widely regarded as one of the best in the country. In addition to ceramic pieces and objects from as far back in time as 1000 B.C.E., the Everson is home to the Ceramic National exhibitions, which has allowed the museum to collect over 4,000 pieces. The American Art Pottery collection, furthermore, has over 2,000 pieces, including objects made by Tiffany, George Ohr, and Rookwood. For those who are more interested in the world of painting, the Everson is also home to a substantial collection of American paintings, with more than 700 works spanning two centuries. Artists represented include Jane Petersen, Eastman Johnson, and Abbott Handerson (from the 19th Century,) and Jackson Pollock, Adolph Gottlieb, and Milton Avery (from the 20th Century.) The Everson is also home to a number of other artistic pieces that may not be found in typical art museums. These include sculpture (with artists such as Mary Frank and George Segal,) video (with over 500 tapes focusing especially on the 1960s and 1970s,) photographs (from the 19th and 20th Centuries,) and decorative arts (numbering over 100 objects.) Regardless of one's interest in the art world, the Everson Art Museum in Syracuse has something to offer. Not only do they have extensive permanent collections; they also frequently host outstanding traveling exhibitions, which recently included "From Turner to Cezanne," which featured a number of fine art pieces from some of the late 19th/early 20th Centuries' most famous and celebrated artists. Whether one is from Central New York or merely visiting, the Everson is an ideal place to visit. Furthermore, they also offer a number of educational opportunities, making them especially useful for teachers wishing to show their students the wonders that can often be found in the world of art and creativity. Educational opportunities are also available for families and other groups. The Everson Museum of Art is open Sunday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission to the Everson is $5, although this is a suggested donation. However, some traveling exhibits may require an additional price, so it is important to check the museum's website before planning a visit. Those wishing to contact the Everson may do so at the information below: 401 Harrison Street Syracuse, NY 13202 315.474.6064 www.everson.org/museum/ |
