In the mid 1900's President Dwight Eisenhower would purchase a farm in Gettysburg, again bringing national acclaim to what was once a sleepy farm town and providing more historic surroundings for undergraduates. Today Gettysburg College is the educational home to some 2,600 students who are pursuing a liberal arts education in buildings that are neighbors to the hallowed ground of American history. Academics. Not everyone who comes to Gettysburg College is a history buff when they arrive, but few students are able to survive four years here without finding that their knowledge and sense of American history during the Civil War has been remarkably improved. There are 41 majors from which to choose, but students are also free to select a double major or to craft their own course of study The ratio of students to faculty members is 11:1 which opens doors to great contact for students with faculty members and for all the pluses that come from comparatively small class sizes. First of course students will want to take a good look at the town itself and spend some quality time in the Gettysburg National Battlefield Park. C. can certainly become part of the fun of the after class hours for those who attend Gettysburg College. But you don't have to create activities all by yourself. On campus there are some 120 clubs and organizations to join and enjoy. Whether your interests are in the arts and music, outdoor activities , religion or student government you will find lots of chances to meet and share your specialties with others similarly inclined. In intercollegiate athletics Gettysburg sponsors 12 men's and 12 women's teams who compete in the Centennial League. Athletes come to Gettysburg without an athletic scholarship as they participate in Division III but that does not reduce their competitiveness or desire to improve in their individual port. Not every student who comes to Gettysburg wants to play sports competitively at the varsity level. For the hundreds who just want the enjoyment of sports there are lots of club and intramural groups that schedule regular games and contests. There is not a lot of room for folks who want to coast along here. Of those who apply to Gettysburg College only one out of three actually get accepted.
